Took you for granted til I couldn’t anymore

I close my eyes and listen to the music
Hear what I want to hear
See what I want to see
And block out the rest

What do whales dream about at night?
What do whales dream?
Do they have dreams?

They say that whales feel things more deeply than the rest of us do
Maybe they’re already enlightened
Wiser than me and you
Are they scared of the dark?
Do they stay up late?
when the lights go out, can they see where they’re going?
Do they get insomnia sometimes, like I do
What do whales dream about at night

It’s comforting to think of them, in their quiet bulk,
Floating around weightless in the dark,
Dancing in the phosphorescence
Making their plaintive sounds
While the troubled world spins around

What do whales dream about at night?
What do whales dream?
Do they have dreams?

Does the war zone above the surface
Percolate down below?
Do they get tangled in their nightmares like some humans that I know?
Are they scared of the dark?

Do they stay up late?
Do they listen to golden oldies til they can’t see straight?
